Charlie Nicholas explains what Arsenal are putting right about transfers under Mikel Arteta

Arsenal have completed two deals in the January transfer window.

Moves for defenders Pablo Mari from Flamengo and Cedric Soares from Southampton have been announced, with no future incoming transfers expected - though Mikel Arteta did leave the door open for business.

The Gunners have been linked with a host of players in the January window - from John Stones and Dayot Upamecano in defence to the likes of Thomas Lemar and James Maddison further up the pitch.

And while Mari and Cedric may not be the most exciting of deals to complete in the transfer window, they have strengthened Arteta's squad in problem areas.

But former Arsenal star Charlie Nicholas says that the Gunners are now paying the price for poor spending in previous windows.

"It's not exactly Hollywood... but Arsenal spent the wrong way for the last two and a half three seasons," Nicholas told Sky Sports. "Now we're getting a punishment for it."

However, Nicolas also says that Arteta has identified the biggest problem the Gunners have faced over the last few years, and has set about improving it - a good sign for the future.

"At least Arteta has identified that the big problem we've all known for three or four years is defenders," he added.

"It's not a great window for Arsenal but it's a reality check."

Arsenal are in action on Sunday afternoon as they face a trip to Burnley in the Premier League.

Cedric Soares is still recovering from an injury suffered whilst at Southampton, and will not be featuring yet for the Gunners.

However, there is a chance of Pablo Mari being selected in the squad to face Sean Dyche's side at Turf Moor - though a start against Newcastle in two weeks' time is thought to be more realistic.
