Charlie Nicholas demands Scotland boss Steve Clarke to start Chelsea youngster vs San Marino

Charlie Nicholas has urged Scotland boss Steve Clarke to hand Chelsea starlet Billy Gilmour a start in the Euro 2020 qualifying match against San Marino.

Scotland have suffered four consecutive defeats in their European Championship qualifying campaign, with the latest being a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Russia last week.

That has left Scotland relying on the play-off route if they are to secure their ticket to next summer's tournament and former Arsenal striker Nicholas has called on Clarke to turn to young Gilmour .

"I think Billy Gilmour should come in from Chelsea and Lawrence Shankland too - Clarke should urge them to play," he told Sky Sports .

"Even if you get a 1-0, then people are still understanding what he is trying to do. Gilmour may not have earned it, but the days of earning caps for your international side have gone.

"We need things to develop before February and the play-offs. Ryan Christie and Callum McGregor have been decent so I would play them both and let them get a result.

"Not a lot of people will turn up at Hampden, but let Clarke try something and get a win under his belt. With Fletcher, Gilmour and Shankland coming, Scotland will win comfortably."

Nicholas has predicted a comfortably 4-0 win for Scotland and Chelsea fans will have something to keep an eye on if 18-year-old Gilmour earns his senior debut.
