Charlie Mulgrew 'wanted' as former Celtic star chased for surprise Premiership return

Managerless Dundee United want to bring Charlie Mulgrew back to Tannadice, according to a report.

The former Celtic star has spent five years in England after leaving Parkhead for Blackburn Rovers in 2016.

He's most recently went on-loan to Wigan Athletic and Fleetwood Town before being released by the Ewood Park club at the end of last season.

But the Daily Mail report United are keen to bring him back to Tayside in what would be his second stint after a brief loan spell in 2006.

A free agent at 35, the report says managerial frontrunner Tam Courts wants to add his versatility to the side for next season.

United consolidated their place in the Premiership after several seasons in the second tier but boss Micky Mellon departed for a return to Tranmere Rovers at season's end.

Courts looks favourite to take the job and Mulgrew could be among his first signings.

The Scotland international made 207 appearances for Celtic and was Neil Lennon's first signing back in 2011.

Mulgrew won five league titles and two Scottish Cups at Parkhead, having been released without making a senior appearance as an academy youngster in 2006.
