Charlie McConalogue nominated as new Minister for Agriculture

Charlie McConalogue has been nominated as the new Agriculture Minister to replace golfgate casualty Dara Calleary.

McConalogue, 47, is a Donegal TD and has been serving as a Fianna Fail junior Minister for law reform since June.

Announcing his nomination, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said Mr McConalogue has a deep and broad knowledge of his portfolio which also oversees Food and Marine.

Mr Martin said he will “face urgent challenges essential to securing the long term future of rural Ireland.”

Wexford Fianna Fáil TD James Browne has been nominated to succeed him as Minister of State.

Mr McConalogue will be this government’s third Agriculture Minister following Barry Cowen’s sacking after 17 days and Dara Calleary’s resignation after 37 days.

Mr McConalogue is also a former agriculture spokesman for Fianna Fail.

He also previously held the position of spokesperson for Children, Education and Skills.

He was first elected to the Dail in 2011 for the Donegal North East constituency.
