Charlie Lawson reveals the biggest regret of his life, his favourite NI restaurants and his secret hidden talent

He's the iconic soap star character we all grew up with, so much so he's probably more often called 'Big Jim' than he is Charlie.

But if you thought you knew all there was to know about NI's very on Charlie Lawson aka Coronation Street's Big Jim McDonald- then think again.

We've put him under the Be spotlight and asked him a series of questions.

In it he reveals his biggest regret in life, his favourite spots in Northern Ireland for some tasty grub and not to mention the strange jobs he's had throughout his lifetime.

What is your fondest memory of growing up in Northern Ireland?

Being given the freedom to explore Lower Lough Erne from the age of seven, on my own, on a Clinker boat, with an outboard motor, two dogs and a Bowie knife!

Where is your favourite place in NI to escape from it all?

“The Lake”, we hire a cruiser every two years from The Manor House Marina and disappear for a week. I know The Lake backwards. Nobody really goes, it’s never busy, so don’t tell anyone!

The best thing about Belfast is...

The people, of course! There are certain places I won’t go, but for the most part, Debbie and I have the best craic from “The Royal” to The Stormont for Sunday lunch and all ports in between.

The best meal you've had in a Northern Ireland restaurant?

You don’t know how lucky you are! From Darling Street in Enniskillen, to The Muddlers in Belfast, with all Mr Deane's establishments, The Ox, Hadskis, Nico x 6, the food in Northern Ireland is far better than the north west of England, including Manchester.

If you could invite three people alive or dead to a dinner party who would they be and why?

Henry Cecil, because Racing is my favourite sport. Paddy Mayne, because his courage was extraordinary and the craic would be 90! And Frank Sinatra, because!

Is there any other career path you wanted to pursue when you were younger?

I wanted to play for Chelsea when I was very young . Later, and now, I would love to have served. Five of my close relatives fought in WW2 and it’s my biggest regret in life.

What's the strangest job you've had in your lifetime?

Lambing. And looking after livestock, because it was so different and rewarding. Acting isn’t.

If you had to choose one, which reality TV programme would you appear on?

The SAS one.

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know

I ride better than anything else I do. I rode at Wincanton in 2001 and rode work for Donald McCain.

Favourite place to go for a drink in Northern Ireland?

Bucks shed...Don’t ask!!

How would you like to be remembered?

He was great craic!
