Atlanta Braves utility man Charlie Culberson’s season came to an unfortunate end last week when he took a 91 mph fastball to the face from Fernando Rodney.
Culberson, who was squaring up to bunt, suffered multiple facial fractures but won’t require surgery. In fact, he’s already back with his Braves teammates despite the scary, season-ending injury.
During the Braves’ game against the Phillies on Wednesday, Culberson was honored with the Braves’ nomination for the Roberto Clemente Award. And that was when he gave fans a glimpse of his terrifying-looking black eye. Like, his entire eyeball appeared to be blood red.
Just … yikes.
Again, the good news — given the circumstances — for Culberson was that his injuries wouldn’t require surgery, which presumably means that the concerning appearance of his eye doesn’t affect his vision.
Before the injury, Culberson was providing Atlanta with a clutch bat off the bench. He’ll just have to wait until spring training to take the field again. In the meantime, though, he already has the perfect Terminator Halloween costume set up for him.
