Charlie Brooker reveals there will be no 2019 Wipe

Charlie Brooker presenting 'Wipe 2016' ( BBC )

Charlie Brooker has confirmed there will be no 2019 Wipe.

The former annual current affairs review programme sees the satirist dissect the biggest events of the year, with the last episode airing in 2016.

“I’m too busy,” Brooker told The Independent while promoting the fifth season ofBlack Mirror. “Which is a pity because it’s the end of the decade. But there’s so much going on and you can’t do half measures."

However, Brooker is not averse to returning to the Wipe format at some stage in the future, saying he would like to do a "Final Wipe".

"I always like the idea of doing a Final Wipe. When the world really is about to f**king end,” he said.

Brooker, along with producer Annabel Jones, have been busy making new episodes of Black Mirror, last year releasing Bandersnatch. The interactive film proved relatively controversial upon release, with actor Will Poulter leaving social media as a result.

"Are there endings I would change? Probably," Brooker told The Independent. "For instance, there’s one part which is quite meta, fourth-wall breaking, when you tell Stefan [Fionn Whitehead] he’s a character on Netflix.

"Originally, that was held back. But we thought it was so different, so we opened it up early on. What that meant was that some people went down the meta path first and that colours their experience.”

Black Mirror's fifth season reaches Netflix on the 5 June. Read Brooker and Jones's full interview with The Independent here.
