Charlie Brooker, Jack Dee and Rory Bremner are to offer a comedic take on the general election for BBC2.
Brooker will serve up a 60-minute special of his Weekly Wipe show, Election Wipe, promising to bring some “much needed confusion” to the national debate.
“Since our show transmits in the run up to the election, it will have to adhere to strict impartiality rules – which means it will, by law, be equally disparaging to all parts of the political spectrum,” he said.
Brooker will be joined by comedian Morgana Robinson and Weekly Wipe regulars Philomena Cunk and Barry Shitpeas to “impart their unique perspective on the politics, propaganda and party plans the nation is set to have rammed down its throat”.
Jack Dee will present a three-part live show, Jack Dee’s Election Helpdesk, in which he will play the role of an agony uncle in front of a studio audience. He will be joined by four guests for each show, taking questions from the members of the audience.
As already announced, Bremner will return to the channel for a post-election show, which promises to offer up the richest pickings in the likely event that no party has an overall majority. His show, Rory Bremner’s Election Report, will ask: “Who really runs the country? And how?”
BBC2 controller Kim Shillinglaw said the trio were “just the kind of strong, lively voices I want as part of our ambitious range of new comedy this year”.
