Charlie Bird health update as he pays heartbreaking apology to concerned supporters

Charlie Bird has given fans an update on his health and has apologised for no longer being able to respond to concerned members of the public who continue to send him well wishes.

The former RTE news reporter took to social media to thank people who have supported him throughout his illness.

He wrote on Instagram: “I want to apologise to people who have supported me.

“I am still getting lovely letters and cards, but with my health situation, I can no longer respond personally.

“Also, my crying episodes in public are getting worse.

“This uncontrolled crying is a symptom of my motor neurone."

Charlie was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2021. Earlier this month, he fulfilled a bucket list wish by meeting rock star Bruce Springsteen at Dublin’s RDS with Bruce dedicating his song 'Land Of Hope and Dreams' to him.

Despite his MND diagnosis, Charlie scaled Croagh Patrick in April last year, raising more than €3.2m for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House.

Charlie appeared on Ryan Tubridy’s final Late Late show last week and gave viewers an update on his health.

He said: 'I'm not doing great. My motor neurone is spreading all over.

“I can no longer dress myself without help from Claire. I have no idea how long more I'll be mobile for.

“Mentally I'm doing okay. For as long as I can, I want to continue helping Pieta and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Foundation.

"I want to continue raising awareness for Samaritans who are another great group.

“If I can, if there are other groups of charities out there, if there is any way I can help you please let me know.

“I know I'm on my final journey but I am going to continue to extend the hand of friendship for as long as I can.”
