Charlie Bird hails Vicky Phelan as a 'hero' during heartfelt Twitter conversation

RTE legend Charlie Bird has labelled Vicky Phelan "one of his heroes" as he organised a chat after a heart-breaking revelation from the campaigner.

The CervicalCheck campaigner recently explained her decision to stop chemotherapy to spend more quality time with her children.

The mother-of-two is continuing to stay on Pembro in the hopes it will allow her to see Christmas with her children.

Since revealing his own battle with motor neurone's disease, well wishes have flooded in for Charlie.

Charlie took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon, saying "I would love to talk to one of my heroes Vicky Phelan…what she said this weekend was most interesting."

He was referring to Phelan's reveal of where she wants to spend the final days of her life as she makes plans for her funeral.

She hopes to spend the end of her life at her family's holiday home in Doonbeg, Co Clare, rather than their house in Annacotty.

And she saw Charlie's tweet on Tuesday, responding that she would be "delighted" to speak with the veteran broadcaster.

The former RTE reporter said last month that he had been forced to decline two interviews due to "major issues" with his speech.

Having undergone tests, he revealed a MND diagnosis.

Earlier this month, Charlie revealed that he’s planned his funeral and he has no regrets about how he lived his life.

He revealed: “My voice will go first. And my voice has been me. My voice will weaken, but whether it goes completely they don’t know.

“And it’s an awful conversation to have, about whether I should record my voice into a voice bank so that when eventually you’ve no voice, you can use it on a computer.”

Vicky has also planned for the end of her life, saying she wants to be cremated and is planning a private funeral for family and friends, followed by a memorial service where some of her favourite bands will perform.

She is not frightened of death on the days when she is feeling well, but when she's sick, she worries "about how it's going to end".

"At the moment my biggest worry is ending up with some complication that I would have to go to hospital for," she said.

"If I end up in hospital, nobody can come in and I’m on my own again and I’ve already spent most of the f***ing year on my own."
