Charlie Bird 'can't stop crying' as he thanks supporters for birthday wishes after turning 73

Birthday wishes have come in from across the country for former RTE journalist, Charlie Bird.

The broadcaster turns 73 today and has shared his next milestone goals amid his battle with motor neurone disease.

Charlie Bird is celebrating his birthday today, with many people sending on their good wishes.

Taking to Twitter, Charlie wanted to thank the children and staff at Scoil Phadraig in Westport for their very special wish as he shared a photo of a birthday card.

He wrote: “I want to thank everyone in Westport and scores of people from all over the country for the birthday wishes.

“My next goal is Christmas and fingers crossed for Bruce in May. Extending the hand of friendship is helping me so much. I am blown away.

Charlie shared a photo of a card from the Mayo-based school and said: “Scoil Phadraig, you are amazing.”

Moments later, the broadcaster shared a video of the children singing ‘Happy Birthday’ and said: “I can’t stop crying.”

Many others sent birthday wishes through social media, with one saying: “Birthday greetings Charlie. What an inspiration you are.”

“Happiest of birthday wishes to one of Ireland's most loved men,” another said.

Charlie recently admitted he didn’t think he would be here to celebrate his 73rd birthday this time last year. He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in October 2021.

He tweeted on August 28: “I want to thank everyone for extending the hand of friendship. I am really struggling at present and emotionally.

“This time last year, I didn’t think I would make my 73rd Birthday but just over a week to go I will.

“Roll on Christmas and Brucie. Thanks everyone. The love is amazing.”

In April of this year, Charlie’s charity, Climb With Charlie, raised over €3.2M for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House.

A book, also titled ‘Climb With Charlie,’ was published with dozens of photographs of the day, and is described as a “joyous record of that unforgettable, emotional day, and a deserved celebration of determination, generosity and community”.
