Charlie Austin claims Leeds United's Patrick Bamford doesn't fit England mould due to 'snobbery'

Prior to Gareth Southgate's England announcement last week, three Leeds United players were in the running for a call-up to the latest squad.

Kalvin Phillips, already a four-cap international, Patrick Bamford and Luke Ayling were all said to be in contention due to a mixture of good Premier League form and injuries to other candidates.

Ultimately, it was only Phillips who received the call from England this time around, despite Ayling and Bamford having been integral members of Leeds' consolidation as a Premier League club.

Ayling has impressed throughout this season with his progressive running, carrying the ball more yards than every other English candidate at right-back.

Meanwhile, Patrick Bamford's 14 goals in his first top flight campaign with Leeds United were snubbed by Southgate, in favour of Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins.

Former Premier League striker Charlie Austin has made a similar comparison between his own international plight and that currently being suffered by Bamford - who took his missed opportunity in good faith.

Speaking to talkSPORT - as quoted in MailSport - Austin recounted his fleeting international career which failed to get off the ground.

"I scored 18 Premier League goals for a QPR team that got relegated.

"To be rewarded with an England call-up was great, but to be rewarded with an England cap would have capped off an incredible year for me personally.

"It just wasn't meant to be. That's probably one regret I have in my career," Austin said regarding his failure to make an appearance off the bench for his country.

"I think that [not playing for a 'big six' club] goes against a lot of people.

"That's going against Patrick Bamford right now, because that's football snobbery. It's just the way it is. Sometimes faces don't fit.

"It's tough to say. What has he done not to be called up?

"There is [favouritism to bigger clubs]. Eric Dier has been called up, has he done enough to be called up? Or are you calling him up because he plays for Tottenham?" Austin added, making reference to the Spurs defender who has been in and out of Jose Mourinho's faltering side this season.

Tottenham have accrued just nine additional points than Leeds United this season, winning just twice more in the league.

On the matter of international call-ups, Bamford was typically gracious to be in the conversation, and did not seem at all downtrodden by his England snub.

"I think every player that gets called up fully deserves it," Bamford said following the Friday night victory over Fulham.

"I think there are a lot of people who probably thought they might get called up but got slightly disappointing news.

"But for me, I've just got to keep doing what I'm doing really, trying to keep working and see if I can put my name in contention for the Euros."
