Charlie Adam wants Dundee player manager role as former Rangers star eyes return home

Charlie Adam is keen on becoming Dundee player-manager.

The former Scottish international is interested in replacing Jim McIntyre, who was sacked on Sunday following their relegation to the Championship.

Adam is a Dundee boy and would be willing to talk to the club about their vacant managerial position at Dens Park.

The 33-year-old – who has starred for Liverpool, Blackpool and Rangers – is a free agent after leaving Stoke City in the summer.

It remains to be seen if Dundee would go down the line of appointing an inexperienced manager, although it could work if Adam was to bring in an experienced head to work alongside him.

The Dundee board are still receiving applications and are going through the names as they look to shortlist.

Coach James McPake has been put in charge of first-team matters for the weekend game with St Mirren.

Several names are being considered by the Dens Park board including David Hopkins, who has won back-to-back promotions with Livingston.

Hopkins is also wanted by Morton to become their next manager so any move to Dens movement from Dens Park would need to come this week.

Former Partick Thistle boss Alan Archibald has also won the Championship title and is another who is in the running, while another contender who is experienced at this level and above is Derek Adams, who left Plymouth earlier this month but has a proven track record at Ross County.

Ayr United boss Ian McCall is another who is likely to be interested in returning to his former club although compensation would need to be paid.

It would be the same if they were to make a move for Alloa Athletic boss Jim Goodwin especially as there are a number of managers out there who are unattached.

Former Inverness boss John Hughes comes into this bracket while ex-Dundee player Morten Wieghorst has also been mentioned.

Dundee striker Kenny Miller, who managed at Livingston earlier this season, had been the bookmaker’s favourite but he wants to concentrate on the final year of his playing contract with the Dark Blues.

Dundee chief executive John Nelms will address the media today to outline the club plans for going forward.

A statement confirmed McPake has been put in temporary charge.

It read: "The club can confirm that James McPake will take control of first team affairs.

"James will take the team for training and will oversee the final Ladbrokes Premiership match of the season against St. Mirren at the Kilmac Stadium at Dens Park on Saturday."
