Charlie Adam sends message to Xherdan Shaqiri and backs winger to solve Liverpool dilemma

Xherdan Shaqiri has been backed to help Liverpool win the Premier League title this season when he returns from injury.

The Switzerland international is currently sidelined with a calf problem and had been limited to just 11 minutes of Premier League action prior to suffering the untimely blow last month.

Also embroiled in speculated spat with Switzerland head coach Vladimir Petkovic over his decision to head Granit Xhaka the national team armband, the playmaker's minutes this season have been limited further by snubbing an international call-up last month as a result.

But former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam has backed Shaqiri to bounce back from his challenging start to the season.

The duo were team-mates for three seasons at Stoke City prior while they clashed publicly in a war of words at the start of last season after Adam questioned the 28-year-old's credentials to play for a club like Liverpool following his move to Anfield.

However, the former Scotland international u-turned following the midfielder's impressive start to life at Liverpool last season despite having to contend with a squad role behind Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

And calling upon his own experience of fighting for first team opportunities at Anfield, Adam has encouraged Shaqiri to not get disheartened by his current situation.

"I think it’s been in and out for him," Adam told the ECHO after Liverpool Legends' 3-2 win over Rangers on Ibrox on Sunday."He’s had a couple of injuries in pre-season as well."

"It was a great move for him but it was always going to be difficult to dislodge Salah, Firmino and Mane.

"At a club like Liverpool you need top players in your squad and they’ve got that. When they’re not playing he can come in and play.

"He’ll play his fair share. He’s always got talent, he’s always had that talent. You just need to look at his CV, he’s a top player.

"Hopefully he can get a run of games at Liverpool but it’s always difficult at a club like that.

"He is good enough to create and score and hopefully he can contribute to Liverpool winning the title."
