Charlie Adam explains the infamous Rangers 'I'm not interested' comment he was 'crucified' for

Charlie Adam has opened up on the infamous Rangers comment that saw him "crucified" by fans.

On the latest Record Rangers podcast , the former Ibrox star recalls insisting he "wasn't interested" in the crisis engulfing the club in 2012.

That sparked an angry backlash from supporters at the time and still lingers to this day - Adam was booed by some upon his return to Ibrox for a legends fixture in 2019.

He admits his words were "silly" but maintains they were solely in reference to the boardroom circus and not aimed at fans and former colleagues.

"I made a silly comment in 2012 when the whole Charles Green thing was going on and there were issues," Adam said.

"I made a comment, somebody asked me and I said: 'I'm not really interested'.

"It's not that I wasn't interested in Rangers Football Club, I wasn't interested in what was going on off the pitch because these people were scything the club out of millions of pounds.

"I got crucified for it.

"When I went back and played in that legends game there were a few boos. But, listen, Rangers will always mean a lot to me.

"It's where I started, it's a great club. One day you could always go back and watch a proper game there, it's great and the people are always welcoming.

"Sometimes, when you're in the flow, high and playing well, sometimes you disconnect to it a little bit, and I did. One comment, sort of, blew that out.

"Hopefully, people can realise it wasn't towards any supporters or the players it was to people who were scything millions out of the club.

"It was very difficult to say because of the hard work that people put in - the manager, the staff and the players - it was sad to see.

"Hopefully, now that they're in a good position with Douglas Park involved, they've got the right people in there - Ross (Wilson), the manager and staff.

"Hopefully, it's going to a place where it's going to be successful to play again."

Despite the lingering resentment he encountered from a minority, Adam was thrilled to be invited back for the exhibition clash against Liverpool last year.

Adam signed for Rangers as a 17-year-old in 2003 and made 88 appearances before leaving for Blackpool six years later.

He's since played for Liverpool, Stoke City and Reading, as well as earning 26 Scotland caps.

Sitting down with Jonny McFarlane and Scott McDermott, he recalls how the winning mentality fostered at Ibrox has never left him.

He added: "Listen, when I got the opportunity to come back and play I was absolutely delighted.

"I missed it, that fear of losing. I've always said in my career I want to win every day.

"People who know me, they'll say I'm quite a moany person.

"I set demands from players even now at Reading. At Blackpool, I was quite successful and I was lucky that I went to Liverpool.

"That was the level I was at. I've found it quite difficult in the past few years or so, people just accepting a draw - 'it's alright, we'll win next week'.

"That Rangers mentality of 'we need to win every week' has been with since I was a kid. Going back there and having that opportunity to play at Ibrox was incredible.

"My kids, they talk about it even though they're young and I was at Rangers when I was a kid. But they talk about going back to Scotland - 'can we go back and play in Scotland, daddy?'

"When you've been at a club like that with the demands and pressure, it's hard when you lose it. It's a wonderful club and it's great to see the things that have changed since I've been there.

"I've not been back to the training ground yet but speaking to people it's changed a lot since I was there.

"Hopefully, one day we can go back and have a look.

"Rangers are a massive club and the pressure is so great but it's an enjoyable pressure."
