Charlie Adam doubles down on Ryan Porteous criticism after Hibs defender’s transfer saga

Bullish Charlie Adam insists Ryan Porteous should be focusing on his football rather than big-money moves after Hibs knocked back a January bid for the defender.

The 21-year-old was subject to a £1million bid from English Championship side Millwall but the offer was refuted by Easter Road chiefs, with teammate Kevin Nisbet also staying at the Hibees after bid from Birmingham City.

When asked about the transfer speculation Porteous insisted that he would "give everything for the club and for the team."

He said: "I think it would be a total waste of a hard six, seven months that we have put in since the start of the season with 10 or 11 games left in the season and we don’t want to throw that away with poor attitude or poor performances.

"I think anybody would be lying if they said they don’t want to go and play at a level like that, but it’s really flattering that Hibs turned down the money that they did."

However, former Rangers midfielder Adam, who has been a vocal critic of Jack Ross' side and Scotland call-up Porteous, reckons the centre-back should be concentrating on climbing the Scottish Premiership table rather than a mid-season exit.

Adam told the PLZ Football Show: "A million quid for Porteous, is good money is it not, Hibs don’t think it is. I think they want to squeeze as much as possible out of the transfer fee.

"This window was probably the hardest to get players out and if he goes well and refocuses that fee might be higher than it was this January.

"I just think the both of them, Porteous especially, have to get back to playing football, not conceding goals and worrying about their own game. And the move will happen in the summer.

"Obviously Jack Ross sounds like he has promised them if an opportunity comes to go to a bigger club they will be allowed to leave but Hibs, who seem like they are in a good financial position, don’t need to sell at the moment."

The Dundee skipper has previously taken aim at Lewis Stevenson - the only Hibees player ever to have lifted both of Scotland's domestic cup competitions - and Scotland squad members Paul Hanlon and Porteous after their disappointing Beftred Cup semi-final loss and questioned whether they were good enough to supply silverware to Easter Road.
