Charles Manson's totally insane answer when asked perfectly normal personal question

Notorious serial killer and cult leader Charles Manson served most of his life behind bars.

But when he was locked up for the gruesome murders his Family carried out, including the slaughter of Hollywood star Sharon Tate, he would never taste freedom again.

The Manson Family were finally brought to justice the year after they carried out two massacres in the space of just two days.

Several members were brought in by police following a raft of car thefts almost four months after they carried out the killings.

But when Susan Atkins was in custody, she started bragging about her role in the murders, and police had the breakthrough they needed.

Initially, Manson, Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten were sentenced to death.

This was later changed to life in prison.

Manson had claimed he had not been present for the murders and had not directed his followers to carry out the killings.

But this was dismissed by the prosecution, who believed Manson wanted the brutal crimes carried out so he could start a race war.

She was having dinner with friends while her husband, director Roman Polanski, was away filming in Europe.

But the evening ended in bloodshed as The Family burst in and slaughtered her guests, a teenage boy and then her.

Steven Parent, a pal of the house's caretaker, was the first to die when he was shot as the group made their way into the home.

Wojciech Frykowski was sleeping on the sofa when he was kicked in the head by Tex Watson, who declared he was "the devil and I'm here to do the devil's business".

Sharon and Jay Sebring were then tied together with a rope round their necks and slung it over the beam in the living room.

Abigail was ordered into the bedroom to get her purse and handed $70 over to The Family.

She managed to flee out of a bedroom door but was followed by Patricia Krenwinkel, who caught her and stabbed her.

Abigail was knifed 28 times.

Wojciech was stabbed but managed to struggle out of the house. He was caught and died after being stabbed 51 times.

Tate was desperately begging for mercy, even offering herself up as a hostage so she could stay alive for long enough for her baby to be born.

But her pleas fell on death ears.

As a petrified Tate called out "mother, mother", Atkins responded in the cruellest way possible.

She told the actress: "Look, b****, I don't care about you.

"I don't care if you're going to have a baby, You better be ready. You're going to die."

Just a day later, The Family carried out another killing spree, this time targeting supermarket executive Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary.

Sharon Tate: How the star was murdered by Manson Family

Manson has never shown any remorse for his part in the murders, or the additionals killings he was later convicted of.

And two decades into his sentence he agreed to a bizarre interview.

During the conversation, Manson was asked: "People look at you today, 20 years later,  and they still have no idea what you're about.

"Tell me in a sentence who you are."

A long-haired and scruffy looking Manson, wearing his yellow prison uniform, laughs hysterically for a few seconds.

Then he replies with a totally insane response.

Manson says: "Nobody. I'm nobody. I'm a tramp, a bum, a hobo. I'm a boxcar and a jug of wine and a straight racer, if you get too close to me."

No one has been able to work out exactly what Manson meant with his bonkers answer.

Although there are theories he was trying to explain he was someone who operates outside normal society.

Manson died from a heart attack and complications from colon cancer when he was 83.
