Charles Ingram says Quiz writers got huge detail of Millionaire cheating scandal wrong

Charles Ingram has revealed that Quiz writers got a major detail about the aftermath of the Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? cheating scandal wrong.

The former army major has said that it was actually his cat and not his dog that was shot after he and his wife Diana Ingram were accused of cheating their way into winning £1million.

Quiz viewers sobbed as the fictional version of Ingram - played by Matthew Macfadyen - cradled the family's dog while he died in his arms before burying him in the garden in last night's finale episode.

But taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Ingram, 56, said it was their cat who was shot and actually survived the attack.

One Twitter user asked him: "Cried at the dog. Please dont tell me that actually happened!?"

"Sadly yes, but our cat. She survived," he replied.

Ingram said the public hatred that followed the scandal had been extreme.

He added: "The widespread public hatred raised by the case, especially after Major Fraud and Final Act. was terrifying for us all.

"We haven't developed much since burning witches."

Ingram was accused of cheating in his episode of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? in 2001.

Bosses claimed they noticed his wife Diana and their alleged accomplice Tecwen Whittock would cough to signify the right answer to a question.

In 2003 the couple were convicted of procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception.

They were handed a suspended sentence, and each fined £15,000 and ordered to pay £10,000 towards prosecution costs, which was later increased to £65,000
