Charles Ingram says he's been self-isolating for 19 years since coughing scandal

Charles Ingram joked that he had been in self-isolation 'for 19 years' ever since the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire scandal.

The television show cheat, who has been propelled into the spotlight because of the recent ITV dramatisation Quiz, was responding to a question on his Twitter.

A recent Quiz viewer asked the former British Army major whether he had watched Quiz and what he had been up to since.

"Just curious, what are you up to nowadays? (Not regarding quarantine.) Have the whole family been watching Quiz? Also, I’m glad to hear your cat wasn’t actually killed," the fan asked.

"I’ve been self-isolating for 19 years!" he joked.

"I’m better at it now, it doesn’t drive me crazy like it used too. That’s it really, apart from researching this case of course. #Quiz."

Although the disgraced contestant has kept a low profile for the last 19 years, ITV's latest hit drama Quiz has revived his story.

Since the mini-series was aired, it appears that Charles has actively replied to viewer's questions on his Twitter profile.

Charles became known as the Coughing Major in 2001.

He was accused and then convicted of cheating after winning the top prize of £1 million on Chris Tarrant's quiz show.

Alongside his wife Diana, they were sentenced to a two year suspended prison sentence.

The father-of-three, who always maintained his innocence, recently said on Twitter that he had watched the ITV drama of the scandal.

He said it was both "terrifyingly accurate and oh yes, horribly cringeworthy."

Viewers of the recent mini-series have also sided with Charles and Diana, suggesting that they didn't actually cheat at all.

It has since been reported that Charles now wants to ask the court of appeal to overturn their original convictions.
