Charles Darwin, the author of On the Origin of Species and originator of the theory of natural selection, rented a house on the Isle of Wight from Julia Margaret Cameron in 1868. Darwin visited Cameron's private studio (a chicken house in her garden) during this period and paid her for the privilege of being photographed.
