When it comes to TNT’s Inside the NBA, players across the league take notice to what is said on the show. If Charles Barkley criticizes a player, it can spiral into a separate controversy. That’s part of what makes the show so entertaining — the players actually pay attention to what’s being said.
And often, they don’t agree with Barkley’s critique.
Joel Embiid had battled through illness and fatigue this postseason, which led to both Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal questioning Embiid’s toughness. Embiid was asked about the criticism in an interview before Sunday’s Game 7 loss to the Raptors, and Embiid — while trying to be somewhat respectful — said that Barkley didn’t know what he’s talking about.
You have to admit — the special shoutout to Shaq was pretty funny.
And Embiid had to be frustrated about the short memories of NBA pundits. All it took was a case of food poisoning and a chest cold to have some talking heads declaring Embiid a liability despite his stellar season.
Still, the NBA Hall of Famer didn’t appreciate Embiid’s remarks as he watched the played-back interview before the game. He immediately hit right back at the Sixers big man.
Barkley said:
“And then when they play like crap and we call them out, we don’t know what we’re talking about. Listen, I’m easy to find. I’ve always said he’s a hell of a player. If he can stay healthy, he’s going to be one of the greatest ever. IF he can stay healthy, the verdict’s still out on that. But I get sick of these guys complaining … But I’m going to criticize guys if they deserve it, and they can kiss my ass if they don’t like it.”
Embiid finished Sunday’s game with 21 points and 11 rebounds in 45 minutes. He left the court in tears after Kawhi Leonard’s bouncing buzzer-beater.
