Charles and Camilla's Christmas message replies disabled after social media backlash

Prince Charles and wife Camilla have shared a Christmas message with fans - but nobody is allowed to comment on it, after a social media backlash.

The pair took to Twitter to share a photo of themselves and a festive message on their Clarence House account.

Their message read: "Wishing you all a happy Christmas and here’s to a better New Year!"

This snap was taken earlier this year by a member of the royals' staff at Birkhall, their home in Scotland, reports the Express.

On November 24, Clarence House limited the possibility to reply to its tweets only to accounts it follows or mentions.

The palace did not comment on the reason behind this move.

Sharing the couple's festive picture, one critic wrote: "They disabled replies. He knew we would flood them with Diana."

Another, calling Charles and Camilla by the nicknames they reportedly used to call one another between the 1970s and 1980s and portrayed in The Crown, said: "I see #FredandGladys took off the comments again".

A third, commenting on the Christmas card Clarence House released last week, said: "I hated Prince Charles and Camilla before season four of The Crown and the recent podcasts I’ve indulged in, but now I LOATHE them. I just saw their Christmas card and I am irrationally angry".

However, many royal fans continue to show their support for the couple.

One called the picture "lovely" while another wrote: "Merry Christmas to Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla."

Royal expert Rebecca English also commented on the picture saying: "It’s like they are saying 2020 can do one!

"A fantastic new festive photo offering from @ClarenceHouse showing the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall in their walking gear, taken at Birkhall, their Scottish residence, earlier this year #Christmas2020 #Christmas".
