Charlatan Boris Johnson's lamb lies are a load of shish

Boris Johnson could not have been clearer about the big win from his recent trip to the US.

The decades-long ban on lamb exports from Britain to America, first imposed in the 80s, would be lifted.

The Tory PM boasted that “kebabs” and “koftas” would be among the tasty products back on US plates.

Our exclusive story today raises questions about the Prime Minister’s transatlantic boasts.

Emails from inside his own government show an official saying some of his claims are “misleading”.

It shows that no “deadline” has been set for lifting the ban and many hoops have to be jumped through for exports to resume.

And he was well and truly skewered by the revelation that kebabs and koftas are “extremely unlikely” to be initially eligible for export.

If Johnson’s own officials do not trust what he says, why should members of the public?

The Tory leader must make an urgent statement clarifying his initial announcement.

His lamb claim will look to some like an attempt at taking attention away from his failure to secure a free trade deal with the US.

The lamb row is the latest example of Johnson’s words failing to match reality.

He was central to the Brexit campaign’s disgraceful lie machine during the EU referendum campaign.

He has consistently made public statements that turn out not to be true.

Johnson is the UK’s Trump and voters must dump this charlatan at the first available opportunity.
