Charkhi Dadri farmers protest DAP crunch

ROHTAK: Faced with shortage of diammonium phosphate (DAP) for rabi crop sowing, farmers on Tuesday staged a protest at Charkhi Dadri and locked the gate of mandi to demand distribution of fertilizer.

Flanked by children and women, farmers reached Charkhi Dadri old Mandi where they protested after DAP went out of stock.

Dadri MLA Sombir Sangwan also reached the protest site and led the agitation to the deputy commissioner’s office at mini-secretariat where they met DC Pardeep Godara to apprise him about the crises.

Sangwan said many farmers had been standing in queue for long hours and they were told after a long wait that DAP fertilizer had gone out of stock. “The government seems to have not made its preparations to supply DAP in sync with the rabi season crop. The Dadri administration stock has gone out of stock and farmers need it badly to sow the next crop,” he added.

Nitin Janghu, convenor of Janandolan Samiti told mediapersons that the farmers had held a protest two days before and locked the mandi gate, but it was opened on the assurance that DAP would be given to farmers as per their requirement. He addedthat they were yet to get DAP fertilizer and only two bags per farmer was being given while their original requirement was much higher. He said that farmers are too busy in the sowing season, but instead they have to stand in queue for long hours only to get disappointed with DAP inavailability.

Charkhi Dadri deputy commissioner Pardeep Godara said the issue of shortage of DAP fertilizer had been discussed with senior officials in Chandigarh and the issue would be resolved within two days.
