Charity workers come to the aid of disabled Annan woman who collapsed at home

Charity workers came to the aid of a disabled woman who collapsed in her Annan home.

Tony Nisbet, a director of the social enterprise, Newstart Recycle, and Councillor Archie Dryburgh, used their first aid skills to help the 50-year-old resident before emergency services attended.

She is being treated in Dumfries Infirmary and the concerned pair are wishing her a speedy
recovery.

Tony was going to to meet the woman to discuss helping her with a move when he heard her cries for help.

He said: “I could hear what sounded like crying, but it was really faint.

“I wasn’t sure what it was until I heard her cry out for help.

“She shouted my name and then nothing.

“I rushed to the bungalow and could see that she had passed out and was lying behind the door with her leg at an angle underneath her and she’d struck her head.”

Tony shouted for Archie – who has been helping out as a volunteer at the nearby Newstart base – to come and help.

He said: “The problem was that because she had fallen behind the door, it was stuck and we just couldn’t get in.”

After some manoeuvring, they managed to get in, raised the alarm, and put her in the recovery position.

And the trained first aiders used their skills to make the woman comfortable and find out what had happened.

Archie said: “Myself and Tony both do basic first aid and defibrillator training with community groups in Dumfriesshire, so we have a lot of first aid experience.

“For me it was important to find out her medical history so that I could pass it on to the medical professionals when they
arrived.

“She had come round and was able to tell us that she is a type 1 diabetic which we could pass on to the paramedics so she could quickly get the help she needed,

“We wish her a speedy recovery.”

Tony said: “It looks like she had some kind of diabetic incident, passed out, and banged her head.

“She’s still in hospital and I’ll be looking to catch up with her when she come home.”
