Charity tribute to big hearted volunteer Sandra

The family of Sandra Caldwell, a long serving volunteer with the Craigshill Good Neighbour Network have donated the offering made at her funeral to her friends at the network.

Her family asked that, instead of flowers,  those wanting to pay tribute  instead  helped Sandra’s friends and neighbours, in her memory.

This week, representing the family, two of her sons, Neil and Stewart presented a cheque for £1011.65 in Sandra’s name to the fund  which supports activities  to reduce social isolation and loneliness in the community.

Network manager, Jane Deary, said: “Sandra cooked for the Lunch Club, knitted for fundraising and supported CGNN’s groups and events.  Sandra will be missed by many in the community of Craigshill where she brought up her family, worked and donated her time and talents to support others.”

Her son, Neil, said: “Sandra Caldwell moved to Craigshill almost 50 years ago and spent most of that time living in the area. Bringing up four boys, mostly on her own. She was a founder member of the Gingerbread Club that was formed in Craigshill.

"She was the manageress in the Stirrup Stane until retirement. It was during retirement that Sandra volunteered with several organisations in Craigshill, particularly with pensioner groups. A supporting influence with CGNN, she will be dearly missed and the money raised in her memory is testament to how loved she was.”

A fellow volunteer, John Colquhoun of Craigshill Good Neighbour Network commented: “I first met Sandra in the Stirrup Stane, which was my local.  Sandra was a barmaid and then became manager.

"As manager, Sandra started having music nights on a Thursday and  she asked me to MC for them and that lasted about five years.  Many great nights were had and the pub was always packed.  I got paid £10 and free beer!

"Doing this gave me confidence to start my own band and play the pubs and clubs.  Sandra was a great support to me and I will always remember her as cheery, bubbly and warm. In later life we met together again both as volunteers to support others at Craigshill Good Neighbour Network.  She will be missed by the many friends she made there.”
