Charity single featuring RTE journalist Fergal Bowers aims to raise money amid coronavirus pandemic

An RTE reporter has gotten behind the microphone once again - but this time he has recorded a song and it's for charity amid the coronavirus pandemic.

RTE health correspondent Fergal Bowers has led the charge in a new charity single campaign called COVAID.

The worthy project has been put together by Bowers along with producer Gary Grant and was recorded remotely and using social distancing.

It aims to raise much needed funds for Age Action and the Irish Red Cross fund.

The track is a reimagined version of a Mike Oldfield song and sees Fergal Bowers voice the spoken word part of the track.

Gary is based in Toronto and put the track together only working with the singers and musicians remotely.

The children's choir all had their parents record their part on phones, the audio was then sent to Gary to put together.

Kerry singer Gemma Goodey and guitarist Kyle Tyther also recorded their parts in Dingle.

The charity single has already hit number one on the world iTunes charts.

Speaking about the massive achievement Fergal said: "After pre-order and downloads today, launch day, it’s number 1 on iTunes world charts. That’s incredible."

"Thank you to everyone who has so generously bought the charity cover song."

'On Horseback' is now available on iTunes, Google Play and all digital platforms to buy for €1.29.
