Charity hands out 1,000 free meals to emergency workers at Queen's Medical Centre

A charity which supports emergency workers with food and refreshments handed out 1,000 free barbecue meals to staff at the Queen's Medical Centre.

The Rapid Relief Team (RRT) is a charity which dispatches volunteers to support the emergency services, and has previously assisted in large-scale incidents such as the Nottingham train station fire back in January 2018.

The catering charity said the event was about giving back in a simple way to the "selfless service of the medical staff" working hard at the hospital.

Bright red tents were erected on the hospital grounds on Saturday, July 6, and medical staff could tuck in to 1,000 meals cooked and served by more than 50 volunteers.

RRT works on a global scale and has also helped the emergency services during incidents such as the Notre Dame fire, Grenfell Tower and the London Bridge terror attacks.

Charity volunteers are rushed out to the scene of incidents and use trailers attached to vehicles to provide hot food and coffee.

The rapid deployment trailers act as a "mobile pit-stop", the charity says.

The coffee trailer even has the capacity to brew 800 coffees in an hour and 120 burgers can be grilled at one time using the barbecue trailer.

A spokesman for RRT added: "RRT is inspired by community spirit and the gift of giving and displays this by supporting communities in times of need, often by serving those that serve others.

"Our teams are mainly comprised of volunteers from the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church and the Nottingham RRT sees this event as an excellent opportunity to give back in a simple way to the selfless service of the medical staff towards the community for many years."

The charity also works with other organisations to help tackle homelessness, disability and engage with youth charities in the UK.
