Politicians in Cardiff West have launched a charity cricket event to raise funds for Leukaemia and Lymphoma research.
The 'Wickes 2010 charity cricket tournament' will take place on 21-22 August in Pontcanna Fields, and launched today for anyone aged 14-40 by Rhodri Morgan AM, Kevin Brennan MP, Canton Councillor Ramesh Patel and Cardiff West Assembly Candidate, Mark Drakeford.
Today councillor Patel has invited Guardian readers to kick-start fund-raising by bidding for a Glamorgan cricket t-shirt signed by the team. Successful bidders will be revealed on 27 July.
Councillor Patel said:
"I would like to thank the President of Glamorgan Cricket club Peter Walker and the Chairman, Paul Russell for their support for the event. Not only have they donated the excellent prize for the auction, they have lent us some of the cricket equipment needed – balls, stumps and bails – without which the tournament would have been very difficult. Please give generously for this deserving cause, I wish everyone the best of luck with their bids."
Those wishing to bid for the signed shirt should contact councillor Patel on 07850874890.
Cardiff West MP, Kevin Brennan said:
"This is a wonderful example of the community in Cardiff West coming together for an important cause. The city of Cardiff has a rich sporting pedigree and what better way to raise money for Leukemia and Lymphoma Research than through cricket. I know the community in Cardiff West will ensure this cricket competition will be a fantastic event."
Mark Drakeford said:
"One of the great things about living next to Llandaff and Pontcanna Fields is to see it used by young people for all sorts of sports. As a life-long member of Glamorgan Cricket Club, I am especially pleased to see cricket played by so many groups, from all Cardiff communities. Many congratulations to all those who came up with the idea of this event which will raise a great deal of money to help tackle a very important health issue."
