Charity concert for Macmillan Cancer Support will take place in memory of voice coach

The family of a Shotts woman are keeping the wonderful memory of her alive by holding a charity concert in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Kathleen McShane from Stane, a singer and voice coach, passed away in December last year aged 82.

Throughout her life she was passionate about singing and raising money for charity in the process, especially Macmillan Cancer Support, and even more so after the care and support they provided both during and after her sister Betty’s illness and death.

Betty, with whom she lived, passed away from cancer two years earlier in December 2018.

According to their niece Clare Aitchison they were “some team”.

She told Lanarkshire Live : “My two aunties were characters in the village and lived together all their lives.

“My Auntie Kathleen was always raising money for Macmillan, and they were really good with my Auntie Betty,”

Kathleen is described as the matriarch of the family, a wonderful human being who had the “most beautiful but powerful voice”.

She had performed in concert halls and venues across the country and been a singer in bands during the 1960s.

The revered Shotts singer regularly put on concerts, with all proceeds always going to a worthy charity.

Her family decided they would keep the tradition going this year by hosting a musical charity event in St Patrick’s Parish Centre, Shotts.

“She was classically trained and had a soprano-type voice,” Clare revealed.

“She would never ask for money for herself, she always sang for charity.”

When Kathleen stopped performing on stage later in life she dedicated her time and energy into vocal coaching, but continued to host charity concerts showcasing the talents of her singing students.

Among them was Paige Turley, who appeared on Britain’s Got Talent when she was 14, and more recently was a contestant on Love Island.

“The last event she held in Shotts a few years back she had Paige singing at it,” Clare added.

The musical event will take place on Saturday, November 6 at 7pm with tickets priced £8.

The family have also set up a JustGiving page which has already surpassed the £1000 mark.
