Charity calls for increased public awareness around need for transparent masks for Scotland's deaf community

A deaf-led charity is calling for increased public awareness around the need for transparent masks for members of the deaf community in Scotland.

The use of face coverings in Scotland is now compulsory on public transport and in shops as coronavirus restrictions are eased amid phase three of the routemap out of lockdown.

According to Deaf Action, as face coverings can muffle speech and prevent lipreading, the new rules mean that deaf and hard of hearing people across the country are missing out on everyday conversations - at a time when it is essential that information is accessible to everyone.

Philip Gerrard, CEO of Deaf Action, told Glasgow Live : "In covering half of a person’s face, 'opaque' face masks hinder communication in all areas of life - especially when out in public and doing everyday tasks such as shopping.

"They can muffle speech and prevent lipreading, causing confusion, distress, and increased isolation.

"Deaf and hard of hearing people are missing out on everyday conversations, at a time when it is essential that information is accessible to everyone.

"We want to see increased public awareness around the need for transparent masks for members of the deaf community.

"When hearing people are aware of the needs of deaf and hard of hearing people, they can work to break down communication barriers together.

"We are also calling on members of the public to support our Clear Masks For All campaign and write to their local MSP about the issue."

Deaf Action have drafted an email on their website that people can use to send to their constituency MSP about the issue. You can visit it HERE
