Charity calls for government to step in as child poverty levels rocket in Glasgow

A Glaswegian charity has called for action at all governmental levels after the news that almost half of the children in Glasgow are living in households that are struggling to survive.

The Poverty Alliance commented after the End Child Poverty Coalition revealed yesterday that a staggering 37 per cent of youngsters living in the Glasgow City Council area are growing up in poverty .

Peter Kelly, Director of the Poverty Alliance, demanded immediate action and called for politicians to stop passing the buck.

He said: “We're a society that believes in protecting each other from harm, so it cannot be right that in some constituencies in Scotland over one-third of children are growing up in poverty.

"Every level of government - UK, Scottish and local - must use all the powers at their disposal to loosen the grip of poverty on people's lives.

"Bringing forward delivery of the income supplement is one such action we can take, because families living in poverty now can't wait.”

Whilst the average is 37 per cent, the rates differ depending on the area, with impoverished areas like Govanhill and Shettleston scoring 42 and 46 per cent.

A Scottish Government spokesman added: "Scotland is the only part of the UK to set statutory targets for reducing child poverty and our plan outlines the range of actions we are taking in areas such as employment, social security and education to lift low income households out of poverty.

"We are doing this in the face of continued UK Government welfare cuts, which will see £3.7 billion reduction in annual spending on social security for Scotland in 2020-21."
