Charity behind adventure playground could be handed 25-year lease from council

The charity behind an adventure playground could be handed a 25 year lease on land in the east end by Glasgow City Council.

Councillors will decide on Thursday whether to approve a £250 per year lease for Baltic Street Adventure Playground (BSAP), a supervised community play area.

The lease would give the charity “long-term security” which would help it to secure funding, a report to councillors states. It currently lets the land from the council on a short-term basis.

“The project is now well established and has attracted increasing numbers of children every year,” the report by the council’s executive director of regeneration and the economy Richard Brown adds.

In 2015, terms were agreed with BSAP and the council granted approval for a 25 years lease. However, due to changes in the organisation and management of BSAP, the 25 year lease was never completed.

A new charitable organisation, with the same aim, by the name of Baltic Street Adventure Playground SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation) has been set up to take over from the previous group. It is now intended that the new organisation takes on the lease.

Mr Brown said: “The lease to the new entity will provide security of tenure and thereby support to an already valued and successful project.

“It would allow the group to source further funding for new projects, such as increasing the amount of indoor workspace that would allow children to use tools in a safe environment while allowing them to learn valuable and transferable skills.”
