Charity accused of spreading 'homophobic literature' promoted on council website, it's revealed

An organisation under investigation for allegedly spreading "homophobic literature" is promoted on a council website, it has been revealed.

The Mid-Ulster Christian Helpline is listed in a local authority's business directory as a "prayer line".

But pamphlets in group's name distributed in the area last month compare homosexuality to incest and urge gay people to "turn from their evil ways" and "repent".

The incident is being investigated by PSNI.

Independent Councillors Barry Monteith and Dan Kerr have written to council management to get the listing removed because it promoted conversion therapy.

The practise seeks to "cure" a person of their homosexuality and is still legal in Northern Ireland.

In a joint statement, the representatives for Dungannon and Torrent said: " Mid-Ulster Council should not be associated with promotion of torture techniques such as this.

"Material like this is anti LGBT community and should be banned in the interests of equality."

Ards and North Down Councillor Connie Egan found the listing while doing research for an Alliance motion to ban conversion therapy here.

She said: "It is astonishing a council website is promoting the contact details of an organisation which offers this so-called service, while also comparing homosexuality to incest and beastiality.

"I have contacted the Council’s Chief Executive to ask the organisation’s details are removed from the website immediately. It is long past time this dehumanising and discredited practice is removed from our society."

Mid Ulster Council has been contacted for comment.
