Charities the Guardian is supporting: Place2Be

Founded in 1994, Place2Be offers emotional and therapeutic support to children in schools. Counsellors give private assistance to children with a wide range of behavioural problems. They offer children an adult to talk to who is neither teacher nor parent.

Counsellors help children with their emotional reactions to the trials of school years, including divorce, deprivation, abandonment, long-term illness in the family, domestic violence, homelessness, physical or sexual abuse, and the trauma of being a refugee.

Of the children seen last year, the charity reported a positive change in 82%, and no school dealing with Place2Be excluded a child.

By next September the charity hopes to be represented in 40 schools in the boroughs of Brent and Enfield in London, Medway in Kent, and in Nottingham.

Place2Be was a winner this year of the Guardian charity award for smaller organisations.
