Charing Cross incident: Emergency services rush to scene after car crashes into barrier and catches fire

Police and emergency services are currently in attendance at the M8 in the Charing Cross area of Glasgow after a car caught fire having struck a crash barrier.

Footage from the scene shows the car on fire with police, ambulance crews and fire engines in attendance.

A police helicopter is also said to be in the vicinity.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirm that three fire engines were called to scene, at the flyover of Junction 17 of the M8 heading towards St Georges Cross/Great Western Road.

They also confirm that they are responding to reports of a vehicle having crashed into the crash barriers.

Glasgow City Council's Traffic Management team TRAFFCOM have issued a bulletin confirming that the M8 Northbound off slip to Great Western Road is closed to all traffic as a result of the incident.

They have advised road users to avoid the area and that delays should be expected.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Police were called around 2.45pm on Sunday, 18 October, 2020, following the report of a car colliding with the central barrier on the M8 Eastbound at junction 17.

"Emergency services are currently in attendance and there are no details on injuries. The road is currently closed as well as both slip roads to Dumbarton Road and St George’s Cross."
