A CENTRAL Coast man is one of two facing charges over allegedly sending offensive messages to an NRL player, police have confirmed.
Detectives from the Fixated Persons Investigation Unit began making inquiries this week alongside the Engagement and Hate Crime Unit after a report from the NRL Integrity Unit that a player had "received numerous offensive and threatening social media messages - some of which were racially charged".
Reports in Sydney media have identified the player as South Sydney fullback Latrell Mitchell.
Extensive inquiries led police to arrest a 22-year-old in Taree and a 25-year-old at Lake Munmorah on Friday.
The men were taken to nearby police stations and charged with use carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence.
Police said they had also seized electronic devices that will undergo forensic examination.
Both received strict conditional bail.
The younger man will face Taree Local Court on May 18.
The Central Coast man is expected to face Wyong Local Court on May 12.
Police said inquiries are ongoing.
