A man is charged with stalking, and trying to abduct and sexually assault a woman in Melbourne.

Daniel Cassidy-Fitzpatrick allegedly followed the woman for half-an-hour before placing a balaclava over her head and dragging her at Hawthorn on November 22.

He appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court via phone on Tuesday charged with false imprisonment, stalking, attempted abduction and assault with the intent to commit a sexual offence.

The 30-year-old is also accused of intentionally and recklessly causing injury and applying force without lawful justification.

His lawyer said Cassidy-Fitzpatrick was on the autism spectrum, and had anxiety and depression.

The court was also told about significant concerns over his suicidality.

It was his first time in custody and he did not apply for bail.

His case is due back in court on February 26 for a committal mention.
