A 36-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences after he allegedly stabbed a restaurant manager with a fork.
The man was charged with one count each of wounding, entering a premises with intent to commit an indictable offence, assault occasioning bodily harm and wilful damage.
The accused faced Cairns Magistrates Court today and was remanded in custody.
Acting Senior Constable Matt Cornish told the media today that there was no obvious motivation for the attack.
"[The alleged offender] actually has no relationship with anyone inside that restaurant, or any workers," he said.
"It appears completely random and unprovoked."
'Significant damage'
Acting Senior Constable Cornish alleged the Mossman man walked into the Cairns North Restaurant before sitting down at a table where two customers were dining.
"He then began yelling and swearing at diners before being asked to leave by management," he said.
Acting Senior Constable Cornish alleged the man then walked to the front of the restaurant and lobbed several items, including a pot plant, at the shopfront.
"He's caused significant damage to the front glass panel of the restaurant," he said.
"He then walked away from the scene to a nearby licensed venue where police located him a short time later."
The case returns to court in August.
