Charges follow death of NRL star's brother

A man has been charged and another is in custody in a suspected hit and run death on the Gold Coast. (AAP)

A disqualified driver has been charged over the death of Jakob Opacic, the brother of NRL player Tom Opacic, killed in a suspected hit and run on the Gold Coast.

Police have also impounded a vehicle and arrested a second man after the 28-year-old came off his bike and died on the Nerang Murwillumbah Road at Natural Bridge on Friday morning.

He had been involved in a verbal argument with two other men on the same road, outside the Numinbah Correctional Centre, not long beforehand.

Nine News has reported that Mr Opacic, whose brother Tom plays for the Parramatta Eels, had been at the jail visiting a woman on the day of her release.

A 29-year-old man surrendered to police at Laidley, west of Brisbane, about 2am on Saturday.

A vehicle found on a Laidley street has been impounded for forensic examination.

The man has since been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, failing to comply with requirement to stop, and driving while disqualified.

He was refused police bail and will face the Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.

A second man was arrested on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday afternoon. The 28-year-old is assisting detectives with their inquiries.
