Sept. 28--A judge Sunday denied bail for a 26-year-old man accused of fatally shooting one man and wounding two others in the South Shore neighborhood early this month, police said.
The slaying of 25-year-old Vuan Evans occurred during a burst of violence from Tuesday, Sept. 1 through Thursday, Sept. 3 that left 11 others dead and more than a dozen wounded, police said.
Shawn Black, 26, of the 2600 block of East 77th Street, was charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated battery discharge of a firearm, police said. Black was ordered held without bail at a bond hearing Sunday afternoon at the Leighton Criminal Court building.
Black, didn't say anything but had a pained expression on his face as sheriff's deputies led him back into custody after Judge James Brown denied bail. Black, who was wearing black pants and a black shirt, had a bandage on his left hand and prosecutors said he worked at a car wash until August when Black was shot.
Prosecutors said on Sept. 2, two of the victims had been waiting in line to receive construction job assignements when the third victim approached and all three bgan talking about 9 a.m. as they stood outside near 75th Street and Exchange Avenue in the city's South Shore neighborhood, according to fire officials and police.
At some point a vehicle passed and an assailant exited, and began firing. The victims were found in the 2600 block of East 74th Place and around the corner in the 7400 block of South Exchange Avenue. Seventeen shell casings were found at the scene, prosecutors said.
Evans, of the 3100 block of East Cheltenham Place, was pronounced dead at 9:40 a.m.at South Shore Hospital. An autopsy Sept. 3 determined Evans died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office.
A 29-year-old man who police initially said had died was in critical condition at Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds to the back, police said at the time. The third, a 50-year-old man, was in good condition at Jackson Park Hospital and was expected to be treated and released, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a police spokeswoman at the time.
Evans was one of 12 people who died after being shot between Sept. 1 and Sept. 3, including the accidental shooting of an 11-year-old boy, police said. At least 13 others were wounded during the same time period.
