A bizarre story has emerged from West Florence High School in South Carolina, where a 32-year-old teaching assistant, Alexander Lewis, is charged with repeatedly using a commercially available “fart spray” designed to mimic the odor of feces, causing widespread disruption and health issues among students and staff.
According to CNN, between August 25 and September 19, 2025, the school community reported a persistent, foul odor that led to headaches, nausea, dizziness, and respiratory problems. One parent reported that the smell triggered their child’s asthma, necessitating three doctor visits.
Inspectors initially found no issues with the school’s gas lines, propane systems, or air quality. However, investigators later discovered that someone had intentionally introduced the odor into the school’s air conditioning system.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office arrested Lewis on September 19. He faces charges of disturbing schools and malicious injury to property exceeding $10,000. The latter charge stems from the estimated $55,000 in damages incurred during the investigation and repairs to the school’s HVAC system.
Authorities released Lewis on a $9,000 bond. The court scheduled his appearances for October 15 and November 19, 2025. Authorities have not disclosed a clear motive for Lewis’s actions. While some may view the use of such sprays as a juvenile prank, the health impacts and significant financial costs have prompted serious legal consequences. Authorities continue to investigate and may file additional charges.
The incident has raised concerns among parents and educators about the potential misuse of products purchased online and the importance of maintaining a safe and healthy school environment.
