Charges against teens accused of fatal pub bashing downgraded

Police found the 46-year-old victim outside the Slug 'n' Lettuce pub.

Two teenagers accused of bashing a man to death outside a pub in Adelaide's northern suburbs have had murder charges against them downgraded.

Lachlan McCluskey and Benjamin Purvis, both 19, were allegedly involved in a drunken argument with a 46-year-old man at the Slug 'n' Lettuce pub at Parafield Gardens early on Saturday morning.

Police were called to the British-themed hotel at about 12:40am and found the 46-year-old with serious injuries.

He was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition, but police later confirmed he had died.

The accused men — both from Paralowie — were charged with murder, but prosecutors on Monday said those charges had been downgraded to manslaughter, although no reason was given.

Both of the accused men were granted bail by the Elizabeth Magistrates Court this afternoon.

Prosecutors allege Mr McCluskey punched the man in the head once, knocking him to the ground.

Magistrate Gary Gumpl told Mr McCluskey the allegation against him was "very serious" and banned the pair from contacting each other.

"I don't want these two guys to get together," he said.

Magistrate Gumpl noted Mr McCluskey had no criminal records, adding there was little risk of him "being a menace to the community".

He was released on bail with a $1,000 bond.

Both men will reappear in court in January next year.
