
A man has been charged after allegedly threatening a another man with a tomahawk in Newcastle.
Police will allege in court that Matthew Mark Baker was involved in a verbal altercation with a man on Sandgate Road at Shortland about 7.40pm on Monday.
The 39-year-old left and allegedly returned a short time later armed with a tomahawk and confronted the man.
Officers from Newcastle City Police District attended and arrested him at the scene.
Mr Baker was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with affray and armed with intent to commit indictable offence.
He was refused bail by police ahead of his first court appearance.
Mr Baker faced Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday, where Magistrate David Price refused his application for bail and adjourned the matter to September 14.
Police said in a statement on Tuesday that investigators were urging anyone who may have witnessed the alleged incident to contact Waratah Police Station or to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
