Chargers WR Keenan Allen trash-talks Chiefs secondary

Offseason workouts are rapidly approaching, which means we’ll be hearing AFC West opponents sound off about the Chiefs.

In a quick media session Monday, Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen was asked about a lot of different things. One of the items on the agenda was the Chiefs’ recent defensive rebuild. Allen said the Chargers locker room has been talking about it, and then he suggested that the Chiefs defensive back group isn’t very good.

“It was brought up in the locker room,” Allen said. “We just looked at their DB group, and I’ll just leave it at that.”

Keep in mind this is all coming from a guy who believes he’s the best receiver in the NFL. At what point does confidence become arrogance?

I’m not sure if Allen has been looking at an old version of the roster, but last time I checked, the Chiefs did a solid job upgrading the safety position. They even added his buddy Tyrann Mathieu, whom he wanted the Chargers to add when Mathieu was a free agent.

The Chiefs secondary also still features Kendall Fuller, a player that Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt schemed Allen away from during the Chiefs’ Week 1 matchup against the Chargers in 2018. Only three of Allen’s targets came from the slot. The others came against three players who are no longer with the Chiefs: Steven Nelson, Eric Murray and Orlando Scandrick. So, really Allen is trashing players he’s never played against, and one that he avoided playing against.

Allen also seems to be forgetting another key factor about the Chiefs’ defensive overhaul. He’ll have to go up against a much better group of coaches getting the Chiefs defensive secondary prepared to play. He won’t get any favors from Bob Sutton’s rigid scheme in 2019.

The Chiefs defensive backs will have plenty of time to prepare to quiet their latest doubter in Mexico City during Week 11 of the 2019 season.
