The Chargers have been steadily rebuilding the offensive line this offseason, signing center Corey Linsley and guards Matt Feiler and Oday Aboushi to deals. But there’s still work to be done.
Los Angeles has solidified four starting spots on the offensive line, but for a team that has dealt with injuries up front in seasons prior, quality depth pieces are necessities.
Therefore, L.A. would benefit from dipping into the free agency pool to find a quality backup or two.
Guards that make sense for the Bolts include Larry Warford, Kelechi Osemele, Austin Blythe, Zach Fulton, Nick Easton, Lane Taylor, James Carpenter, among others.
I expect the starting left tackle position to be addressed through the draft, but there’s nothing wrong with taking a veteran who can serve as a swing option on either side like Dennis Kelly, Ricky Wagner, Cameron Fleming or Roderick Johnson.
There’s also the possibility of re-signing one of their own starters from last season, which is made up of Sam Tevi, Forrest Lamp and Ryan Groy.
The bottom line is that the Chargers know they can make a deep run with quarterback Justin Herbert at the helm. The team has the weapons around him, but they need to ensure the protection is going to be fortified the entire season.
With the cap space that Los Angeles has, there’s no reason why they can’t get him what he needs to play to his full potential in 2021 and beyond.
