Chargers vs. Steelers: 3 things that stood out in the first quarter

The Chargers trail the Steelers at the end of the first quarter, 14-0.

Here are three things that stood out:

Opponent has a comfortable lead early, again

One of the Chargers’ biggest problems coming into this game was that they would be forced to play catch-up because they’d be down early on, and that’s the case in this game, down 14 points at the end of the quarter.

Offense is sloppy

The Steelers knew that they were going to need to attack a questionable Chargers offensive line to stall their production, and that was the case in the first quarter. Philip Rivers is facing the heat, which is causing him to get the ball out quickly. He had a horrid backwards pass to Melvin Gordon, in which he didn’t see, resulting in a return for a touchdown. Los Angeles can’t establish a ground game, either.

Defense has no life

The first defensive drive was great, ending up in a three-and-out but the second was awful. Missed tackles and wide open running back lanes allowed the Steelers to have success on their touchdown drive.
