Chargers vs. Steelers: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 6

The Chargers are looking to get back on track against the Steelers on Sunday night.

Here are three key matchups to keep an eye on:

Steelers QB Devlin Hodges vs. Chargers defense

It’s likely that Pittsburgh is going to be rolling with the undrafted rookie behind center, as Mason Rudolph has yet to pass concussion protocol. Hodges came in last weekend when Rudolph went down, giving us only a slight glimpse of what he brings to the table.

From the limited action, the former Samford product looked comfortable in the pocket and made some strong throws. But like any rookie quarterback, it came with some growing pains, and that included an interception which was negated by a Ravens penalty.

Los Angeles’ defense has been stout, ranking No. 9 in total points allowed. But there are some things they can’t afford to happen on Sunday, one of which is the early defensive woes, allowing their opponent to get on the board and forcing the offense to play catch-up.

Chargers offensive line vs. Steelers defensive line

This is a game that could ultimately be won or lost in the trenches. The Steelers boast a very talented unit that has sacked the quarterback 19 times this season. They have a fearsome pass rush led by T.J. Watt and Stephon Tuitt and they got a healthy Cam Heyward back last week.

The offensive line has gone under some slight changes after Mike Pouncey’s injury. Dan Feeney will move to center and Forrest Lamp will play left guard. Although this look held up fine against the Broncos, this will be their toughest challenge yet and they will need their tackles to be on their A-game, as well in order for any success through the air.

Chargers running backs vs. Steelers LB Devin Bush & S Minkah Fitzpatrick

Running backs Austin Ekeler and Melvin Gordon struggled to get anything going against the Broncos last Sunday. Denver’s defense was playing fast and physical, making it tough for them to gain anything positive on the ground. They will be tasked with getting past another physical and nasty tandem.

Bush, Pittsburgh’s first-round selection, leads the team in tackles and ranks No. 3 in the fumble recoveries. Lynn had some promising words for the rookie the other day.

“You can tell he’s young, (and) he’s raw. But his speed, man, it’s fast. He’s a run-hit guy,” Lynn said.

Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick, who was acquired via trade has helped the defense significantly. The numbers show the impact he’s had, but it’s doesn’t take that long to spot him on the field, where he is constantly around the football in coverage or coming down the alley to make stops against the run.
