Chargers vs. Broncos: 3 things that stood out in second quarter

The Broncos still lead the Chargers at the halfway mark.

Here’s what stood out:

Dinking and dunking is sort of working

The lack of wide receivers and the pressure the Broncos are bringing is evident because the Chargers are resorting to the short passing game, primarily with running back Austin Ekeler. Los Angeles’ play calling has been rather vanilla, especially on the last play of the quarter.

Offensive line can’t keep the pressure off of Rivers

There hasn’t been much offensive production because the Broncos are bringing the heat from a variety of angles, forcing Rivers to either throw it short or throw it away. The Broncos are playing fast, leaving the offensive line with no answer. After doing four consecutive weeks of paving the way in the running game, they haven’t been able to do so.

Controlled the time of possession

The Broncos only had the ball for 3:27 in the second quarter. The Chargers defense did a nice job holding them to only a field goal, but because the lack of big plays from the offense, it didn’t result in much and ended up hurting them ultimately since they didn’t get anything out of it.
