Chargers vs. Broncos: 3 things that stood out in first quarter

The Broncos lead the Chargers 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Here’s what stood out:

Run defense is still questionable

After two dominant games against the run, the defense resorted to its old ways. Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay ran for 35 yards and a score on four carries. The defensive line is not clogging up gaps and the second and third level have no answer for Lindsay’s speed.

Zone defense is not working

The Chargers got gashed on the ground, but through the air on the second drive with a quarterback Joe Flacco touchdown to wide receiver Courtland Sutton. The Broncos have been exploiting defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s zone defense, which resulted in Sutton getting open and safety Rayshawn Jenkins couldn’t make the tackle.

Slow offensive start

Running back Melvin Gordon got the majority of the looks on the first drive. Aside from a five-yard reception, he’s struggling to get yardage on the ground. Austin Ekeler was involved in the passing game in the second drive, and they were able to find a little bit more success. The lack of pass catchers is evident, too. Keenan Allen is the only wideout with a catch.
